The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County, Office of Community Health and Planning is proud to present a new webinar series titled “Healthy Happens Here”. Three events will be held each month and will cover a variety of topics including nutrition, mental health, tobacco cessation, and chronic disease self-management. Please feel free to share with your partners and general public as it is open and FREE to everyone! Stay tuned for our upcoming webinars.

Mindful Eating Webinar - August 26, 2021 @ 1 P.M.

This presentation was presented by a local Registered Dietitian who shared about mindful eating and how to incorporate this practice into your daily life. During this presentation, mindful eating tips were also shared on how to set up a healthy home environment for both parents and children.

Please join us on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. for the Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month webinar. May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. Join us for this webinar to learn from a local physician from the Florida Center for Allergy & Asthma Care. During this presentation, you will learn about what is asthma, the risk factors associated and ways to diagnose and treat asthma. There will also be an emphasis on the misconceptions of asthma and COVID-19. Food Allergy Awareness Week will also be highlighted during this presentation too. Food allergies are a growing food safety and public health concern worldwide. Join us to learn more about how to raise awareness of food allergies.

Perennial Edibles Gardening: Easy to Grow Vegetables and Fruits That You Can Grow All Year - Thursday, April 8, 2021 @ 1 P.M.

During this webinar you will hear and learn from a local gardener on growing your own perennial edible garden in Miami-Dade County throughout the whole year. You will also learn more about the Florida-Friendly Landscaping program from the University of Florida which was created in 1993 as Homeowners were identified thru research as being responsible for 60% of non-source pollution from fertilizer, pesticides and herbicide usage and used disproportionally higher volumes of water in their home landscapes as well. The program uses 9 principles to guide all in how to maintain their landscapes/gardens in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. These principles translate into Best Management Practices (BMP) in other areas of how we interact with our outdoor environment.

Ending the HIV/STD Epidemic: The Truth on HIV and STDs - Thursday, April 15, 2021 @ 2:00 P.M. 

For STD Awareness Month, observed each April, we wanted to host this webinar. It is an opportunity to raise awareness about what STDs are and how they impact our lives; and understand why it’s important to prevent, test for, and treat STDs. The surge of STDs endangers the health of too many in the United States. During this webinar, you will hear from a local public health professional on the truth about HIV and sexually transmitted diseases as well as local resources. Colorectal Cancer Awareness - Tuesday, March 16, 2021 @ 2 P.M. 

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month. Join us for this presentation to learn about what colorectal cancer is, how to lower your risk, signs and symptoms, and the current screening tests available for colorectal cancer. There will be an important emphasis on regular physical exams including complete examinations with the appropriate labs to ensure patients are staying focused on living healthy active lives. A key focus that will be highlighted is the importance of educating patients on how to avoid unnecessary ER visits and hospitalizations.

Nutrition and Your Heart - Wednesday, February 24, 2021 @ 2 P.M.

This webinar recording will have two presentations that focus on improving your heart’s health and ways to reduce chronic disease. The first presentation is How To Know What Food To Eat And What To Avoid For Your Chronic Disease. For this presentation you will have the chance to learn more about the important role food plays in managing your chronic disease. You’ll learn about the many different foods that can improve your condition and which to avoid to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The second presentation is Food, Movement, and Rest as Medicine for Daily Stress. In times of stress, we often neglect to take care of ourselves. Whether it is the stress of work, school, or family, it is important to take time to refocus and reset ourselves. In this presentation, we will explore the impact of poor food choices, inadequate exercise, and insufficient rest on our health, in particular heart health. By learning the skills necessary to tune-up each area, we open the possibility for greater health and resiliency.

New Year, New Habits  - Wednesday, January 27, 2021 @ 10:30 A.M

To celebrate the New Year, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County’s Office of Community Health and Planning will be hosting a webinar titled New Year, New Habits, which is part of the Healthy Happens Here webinar series. This webinar will include two presentations that focus on improving your health and practicing healthy habits in 2021. The first presentation is Setting & Achieving Your Goals. This presentation will highlight the importance of defining one’s goals and goal setting, understanding the different types of motivation, methods of overcoming barriers, and how you can create S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goals. The second presentation is Quit Season 2021: The Benefits of Quitting & Tips to Quit Tobacco Use. In this presentation you will learn about the different reasons to quit tobacco use, the benefits of living a tobacco free life, and the resources available to help tobacco users successfully quit.

Look Beneath the Surface: Human Trafficking Awareness Webinar - Wednesday, January 20, 2021 @ 10:00 A.M

In recognition of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month and in support of the Look Beneath the Surface campaign, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County hosted a virtual webinar on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. At this event, we had two expert speakers in the field of human trafficking: Marta Trujillo from Miami-Dade County Coordinated Victims Assistance Center and Marta Martinez from Project GOLD at Kristi House. This webinar covered what human trafficking is, what it may look like, and how you can help.
